SCECSAL – a regional association

by

jacarandaThe advocacy project is aimed at local and regional library associations.

Wikipedia offers a long – but not complete – List of library associations. I note that SCECSAL – the Standing Conference of Eastern, Central and Southern Africa Library and Information Associations needs to be added.

SCECSAL  covers these countries: Angola, Botswana, Burundi, Congo Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, Seychelles, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The first SCECSAL was held in the city of Dar es Salaam (1974) and subsequently Lusaka (1976), Nairobi (1978), Maseru (1980), Blantyre (1982), Harare (1984), Gaborone (1986), Mbabane (1988), Kampala (1990), Dar es Salaam (1992), Blantyre (1994), Maseru (1996), Nairobi (1998), Windhoek (2000), Johannesburg (2002), Kampala (2004), Dar es Salaam (2006) and Lusaka (2008).

The next and 19th conference will be held in Gaborone 2010.

The SCECSAL country reports provide very useful snapshots of current library developments in many of the member countries.
