ST 26/10: Twenty-three global variables

by

The proposed questionnaire for global statistics includes 23 variables.

One of these can, however, be dropped, since  it can be derived from two of the others:

F4 =  Other costs = Total operating expenditure – (Staff costs + Expenditure on literature and information)

The only national library statistics I know really well, are the Norwegian ones. So I ask: to what extent are such data available in Norway today?

In 2008 Norway library authorities collected data on nineteen of these twenty-two variables. The missing ones were the presence or absence of a web site, the number of female employees and the hours of training per staff member.

But Norway only published data on ten of the nineteen.

  1. In 2008 Norway had 430 independent library units – and 799 library branches/outlets (A1)
  2. The average opening period per library branch (including main libraries) was 20.1 hours (A3)
  3. The national average of libraries with online catalogs was 92% (A5)
  4. The total number of volumes was 19.6 million (B1)
  5. The total number of events was 7990 (C1)
  6. The number of visits was 22.3 million (D4)
  7. The total number of staff was 2520 (E1)
  8. Total operating expenditure was appr. 200 million USD (F1)
  9. Total staff costs were appr. 133 million USD (F2)
  10. Total media costs were appr. 22.7 mill. USD (F3)

    • Collected and partially published
  4. Percentage of libraries offering Internet access for users
    • Collected but not published
  5. Percentage of libraries offering online catalogues
    • Collected and partially published
  6. Percentage of libraries offering websites
    • Not collected. Libarries are, however, invited to report on

    • Collected but not published
  4. Number of databases (purchased or licensed)
    • Collected but not published

    • Collected but not published
  4. Number of visits
    • Collected and published for ever municipal library
