SFA provides a general outline of a full-day web-supported course that can be applied in all countries with an interest in library statistics. Interested learners should be able to work through the content in a flexible mode.

SFA has been tried out in two pilot settings and as several one day courses in Lithuania and Norway. The Statistics and Evaluation section has selected the workshop as its new priority action.
How will you evaluate the project?
Workshop are evaluated by participants at the end of the workshop and by organisers and instructors soon afterwards. All evaluations will be received and considered by the GLOSSA project, which supports the sharing of experiences and the ongoing development of the Statistics for Advocacy course.
- Travel and subsistence: 500 euros for each of three courses (Poland, Uganda, open)
- Other costs : 500 euros for each of two courses (translations, develop local case materials) (Uganda, open)
As part of the BSLA programme, the workshops are intended to disseminate skills in statistics-based advocacy in libraries world-wide. Fully local courses, based on local participants and resource persons only, can not always achieve this. In the early stages of the SFA effort, instructors must also be brought from the outside.
Regional or national courses should preferably recruit a some participants – and possibly a co-instructor – from a neighbouring region or country to support the preparation of future courses. In such cases, travel & subsistence support is valuable.
Norway, Poland, Uganda
At the time of writing [October 2011], we know of three SFA workshops that are planned for 2012 – in Norway (January), Poland/Public Provincial Library in Olsztyn (Spring) and Uganda (June), respectively. We want to be able to support one additional initiative.
In Poland and Uganda the organizers will apply for funds from national or international sources, but the processes have not come far enough for providing specific information. The Norwegian course will be sponsored by Telemark County Library and will not need IFLA support.
Statistics for Advocacy is part of the BSLA training program.
This particular module deals with the role of statistical reasoning and documentation when we need to argue the case of libraries. To use statistics, we must refer to statistical data. Since the quality and quantity of statistical information vary a lot between countries, we must choose arguments and select examples that are relevant to local conditions.
The need to promote the use of statistics was one of the main outcomes of IFLAs “Global Library statistics for the 21st Century”- Project. The development of the SFA Workshop (funded by the BSLA-project) addressed this need.
Conducting the workshops in three different countries will
- further the initial goal of competence-building for statistics in these countries
- train some trainers for further dissemination of the workshop
- provide further input (excercises, case studies, experience) for future implementations of the course within the BSLA Project.
The course module
The module provides a general outline of a full-day course that can be applied in all countries with an interest in library statistics. We also provide a range of case studies and exercises that reflect different local conditions. More will be added in the near future. Only some of these can be covered in a one-day course.
Our target group is librarians with an interest in statistics. We assume that our participants have some knowledge of basic tools like e-mail, web searches, word processing and spreadsheets. The course uses web-based resources to extend these basic skills. On the web, we have selected a few tools that are free, simple and widely used.
The module will also be available electronically. Interested learners should be able to work through the content in a flexible mode. This will enhance its usefulness for self directed professional development
Statistics for Advocacy has been tried out in two pilot settings – Crete and Gothenburg. Participant response was generally positive. We distinguish between the course as such (SFA) and the project that supports its development – on an on-going basis (GLOSSA).
The course is fully documented on the web. Discussions and supporting materials are available through the GLOSSA project blog.
The Statistics and Evaluation section has selected the workshop – or Developing a training module for the use of library statistics for advocacy as part of the Building Strong Library Associations Programme – as its new priority action. This implies an interest in further promotion, development and resource sharing related to these courses in the years ahead.
The county library in Olsztyn, Poland, plans a Statistics for Advocacy course in their region in the spring 2012.
The IFLA SES committee has supported this initiative with a grant of 500 euros for adapting and translating the course materials into Polish.
