HE indicators (I)*

Indicators

Seven higher education library indicators

The Global Statistics Project (phase I) proposed seven indicators describing the library situation in higher education at the national level.

  1. Number of registered users in higher education libraries as a percentage of number of students of these institutions
  2. Average number of higher education library employees
  3. Average number of volumes in higher education libraries per 1000 students of these institutions
  4. Average number of higher education library loans per student of these institutions
  5. Ratio of female to male higher education library employees
  6. Expenditure on literature and information at higher education libraries per student of these institutions
  7. Number of visits to higher education libraries per student of these institutions

Variables

In order to calculate these indicators, we would need the following data:

A. Input data

  1. The number of HE library employees
    • The number of female employees
    • The number of male employees
  2. The total expenditure on literature and information
  3. The number of volumes in stock

B. Service data

  1. The number of loans
  2. The number of visits

C. Other data

  1. The number of registered users
  2. The number of HE libraries

D. Non-library data

  1. The number of students in the relevant HE institutions

In order to collect these data on a regular basis, local administrations would need reports from every library unit.
